Cocks Moors Walking Group

Walking group Last Friday I joined The Cocks Moors Wood walking group which has in excess of 20 members and has been in existence for almost two years. It is the inspiration of local man, John Hewitt, a keen walker who developed the group as part of the ‘Fit for Life’ Walk 2000 Project.

John says, ‘I wanted to show that it wasn’t necessary to spend lots of money on expensive equipment in order to keep fit.’

The group meets on a weekly basis and takes part in a 3Km walk involving warm up and warm down sessions to improve flexibility and reduce the risk of injuries. The route tends to follow a path along the Alcester Rd South, the canal path and the old BMX track. Much of the path has been refurbished by local volunteers.  Most members of the group are retired with the oldest being aged 77.

I really enjoyed my walk with the Cocks Moors group. This is a classic example of local people doing it for themselves. The group is really friendly and often meets for social events as well as the walk. They were busy planning their Christmas lunch when I arrived. It just goes to show that it doesn’t take lots of money to have a healthy and enjoyable time.

The group meets at 2:30pm on Fridays outside the main entrance to Cocks Moors Leisure Centre. For more information please contact my office on 0121 443 3878.
