Knife Campaign Success

Cookware manufacturer Jean-Patrique Cookware has agreed to sign the Government's knife sale safety pledge after I raised concerns about its online knife sales.

The government recently launched a pledge for retailers to sign up to where they commit to a number of measures to ensure they aren't selling knives to under-18s, including providing training to staff and displaying signage stating that knives are not for sale to under-18s. Large retailers such as Tesco, Sainsbury's, Homebase and B&Q have already signed up to the pledge.

I welcome this step forward by Jean-Patrique Cookware but call on them to tighten up their online sales procedures. They continue to sell cut price knives online and have extremely limited checks in place to ensure they are selling to people who are 18 or above.

I have asked the Home Office to tighten up the retailers pledge to include a promise to check proof of age at the point of delivery where goods have been purchased online.

I hope that Jean-Patrique will put in place this extra measure as soon as possible.
