New buses for Birmingham | |
I recently joined National Express this week to launch the first of 45 new buses entering the Birmingham fleet. The region's largest bus operator has invested over £5 million in state of the art buses for the city with easy access for buggies and wheelchairs, CCTV cameras and Euro five engines - the cleanest on the market. The new single deck buses will replace vehicles currently running on routes 6 and 37 to provide Birmingham bus users with the highest standard of public transport. Buses play a vital role in Birmingham by providing residents with affordable access to jobs, education and healthcare. I'm delighted to unveil the new vehicles which will provide reliable, safe and environmentally friendly transport across the region. To help promote the environmental credentials of bus travel National Express has launched a major marketing campaign across Birmingham. Over 100 locations across the city feature high impact designs encouraging car users to consider the environmental impact of their travel. Michael Fox, Area Manager for National Express West Midlands, said: "This investment in new buses marks our commitment to public transport in Birmingham. These new vehicles are amongst the cleanest on the market and will help to drive down carbon emissions in the city while encouraging more people to leave the car at home." The new vehicles follow on from a £12 million investment in new 90 vehicles for the region last year. National Express operates a fleet of over 1,500 buses across the West Midlands. Michael added: "We know the single deckers are a popular choice with customers and we believe they'll be a welcome addition to the 6 and 37 service."
